Regular season ends with a win on senior night

The boys' basketball team ended the regular season with wins over the eventual conference champion, Madras High School and Estacada High School on senior night. After acknowledging the 3 senior cheerleaders and 8 senior boys' basketball players, the team won the game and advanced to face Tillamook High School in the 4A play-in game. It was nice to see the boys play well during their last two home games.

Boys' Basketball loses to Gladstone

The varsity boys' basketball team is 10-9 this season with several tough losses on their record. The freshmen and junior varsity teams are both undefeated. Recently the teams faced off against Gladstone for some conference competition. The freshmen and JV won and the varsity team lost 42-62.

Girls' Basketball defeats Madras

The girls' basketball team defeated Madras in front of a capacity crowd. The girls' hosted a large number of youth basketball players for Future Falcon Night on a night that they faced one of the strongest teams in the state. There were a lot of Madras fans on hand too, which made a great environment for a high school basketball game. The girls' continued their undefeated season by winning in convincing fashion by a score of 72-53.

Nets installed on the Hitting Facility

We recently installed the nets for the hitting facility. The nets will allow softball and baseball to create stations so that many of their athletes can use the facility at the same time. Both baseball and softball are still planning a few fundraiser opportunities to finish off the project. The Texas Hold' Em tournament is scheduled for Saturday, March 12.

Steak and Seafood

This year's Steak and Seafood was the bigger and better than ever before. We had over 650 guests and by all accounts everyone had a great time. The booster club did an excellent job organizing the event, and coaches, students and parents volunteered their time before and after the event to make sure everything went smoothly. It appears that the event raised nearly $28,000 for La Salle athletics. The setup began immediately after the girls' basketball game on Friday night. Various teams completed their tasks in shifts throughout the day on Saturday. On Sunday morning the boys' basketball team cleaned up the gym so that they could have practice. It all made for a long weekend, but it was great to see so many people contributing their time, effort, and good ideas to help improve the event.

Boys' Basketball Defeats Astoria

The Boys' Basketball team defeated Astoria on Friday night with a score of 48-30. Prior to the game the crowd observed a moment of silence in honor of Patti Marihart who passed away one year ago after a valiant battle against cancer. She was the mother of La Salle Senior Justin Hannan. The players and fans wore pink in her honor. The boys played very well. They are currently 8-6 and ranked 18th in state as they begin the Tri-Valley Conference schedule. Both the boys and girls teams have had great support from the fans during the non-conference schedule. The girls' team is currently 14-0 and ranked as the best team in the state.

Girls' soccer lost to Sisters High School on a snowy field

The girls' soccer team defeated Seaside High School in the regional play-in game. That game was played in rain that blew in sideways during a stormy evening on the Oregon coast. For the first round of the playoffs the girls had to travel to central Oregon to play Sisters High School. During the drive out there a snow storm hit central Oregon and the team was faced with the option of postponing the game, or playing in the snow. The lines on the field were cleared with a blower while some of the fans tried to make large snow men to clear off the grass. During the game the ball stopped as it hit the ground, which forced the girls to adapt to the weather conditions. Unfortunately the strong Sisters team prevailed, but it was a great season for our girls' soccer team.

Varsity Football Defeats Cascade 35-0

The football team is off to a great start this season. In the first week of the season the Falcons defeated Roosevelt. Their only loss so far was to W.F. West, which is a large school from Washington. In week three the Falcons defeated Philomath. On Friday they defeated Cascade 35-0. J.J. Fisher has had several impressive runs this season and the Falcon defense has played very well.

A few more facility upgrades

During the summer construction crews built the new baseball and softball hitting cage. We are currently trenching to bring power to the building. The next step will be to install nets.

The new hitting cage will allow us to take down the hitting cage that is currently in the gym. The net used to hang down over the student section and the wires frequently interfered with volleyball matches.

We also installed a new storage shed for the varsity softball field.

A generous company loaned us a storage container that is used to store football equipment on one side and soccer equipment on the other.

This week we also were able to purchase two soccer goals that will be used on the JV soccer field. This year we added a JV2 Boys' Soccer team and so we will continue to use the old set of goals and create a fourth location for soccer players to practice.

Changes to the Sheldon fitness center

After four years of hard use and with the addition of two new PE teachers, we felt it was time to make a few changes to the fitness center. We rearranged most of the equipment, hung two new mirrors, added two stations for power cleans and had the floors professionally cleaned. Although the typical person might not notice the differences, the cleaning crew needed to dispose of 100 gallons of dirty water after cleaning the floor.

Press Box Clean Up

At the end of this summer Eric Hunt spent a great deal of time working on the press box. We threw away many broken chairs and doors, ripped out the flooring, painted the walls and installed some new flooring that was left over from a different school improvement project. It looks MUCH better thanks to Eric's hard work.

Red and Blue Jamboree

On Friday we held the Red and Blue Jamboree. All of the Fall sports teams performed as a final tune-up before the regular season begins on September 2. The Booster Club used the covered hitting facility as an eating area for all of the spectators and participants.

This winter we installed two new tennis hitting walls, the weather finally cleared and I was able to take a camera outside without getting rained on, so I thought I should share a picture of the walls. The boys and girls used the walls all spring and seemed to benefit from the various drills the coaches added to their practices.

Two years ago we demolished our stadium bleachers and used metal scaffolding to enter our pressbox. This summer we constructed a wooden staircase. Although the hope is to build a new stadium soon, this staircase will get a lot of use until then.

We also recently broke ground on the construction project to build the new covered hitting cage for baseball and softball. It will be located behind the stadium, in between the grass soccer field and the tennis courts. In the background you can see the varsity baseball field.

Finally we also purchased some new pads for our football sleds, a new storage shed for the softball team and some weight lifting equipment for the fitness center.

Girls' Golf 4th in State, Boys' Golf 2nd in State

The boys' and girls' golf teams did very well this year. The boys' won the conference championship and finished second at the state championships in Eugene. The girls finished second at the conference championships and fourth at the state championships in Redmond.

La Salle Boys' Tennis wins District Title, Girls' Doubles team qualifies for the State Championships

La Salle did well at the District 2 Championships for boys and girls tennis. The boys' team won the district championship and qualified two individuals into the state tournament. Max Hey won the singles title and Will Holloran qualified in third place. For the girls' team Alex Anonuevo and Alison Burros qualified for the state tournament as a doubles team. Mike Stone did a fantastic job organizing the meet. He runs the Portland Tennis Center and we were lucky to be able to use it as our championship location. Mai Hey took some photos of the awards ceremony.

First Annual Texas Hold'em

On Saturday, March 13, our Baseball and Softball teams held the first annual Texas Hold'em event at La Salle. We had 48 paid participants and raised $3,200 for the hitting cage. After about three and a half hours of competition, Wayne Hammersly finished in third, Chris Bene (left) was second and Jim Abramson (right) was the champion.

Good Morning Boosters,

This week-end marked the start of the exterior concessions area upgrade. I have attached several pictures to show the progress that we have made. During the two days we have completed the addition of the new storage room, installed lights in said room, installed plywood and insulated 50% of the north wall, filled all of the south wall gaps and installed back on all of the under-counter cabinets. Additionally, we moved the S & S items upstairs, cleaned and sorted all of the items in the cabinets and disposed on a significant amount of items that were no longer needed. Many thanks to Stew White, Jamie Stengel, Kellee Harris, Edmund Waters, Dave Lasbaugh, Bill Hays, Stan Griffith, Tom Brown, and Joe Eichhorn for their hard work!!

This coming week-end we will be doing a small amount of woodworking and a whole lot of painting. We will start at 9:30 AM on Saturday and Sunday, so bring your painting clothes and caps and “we will paint this town red, white and blue”.

Boys' Basketball finishes their season

The boys' basketball team lost a close game against Estacada on Tuesday that would have sent them into the playoffs if they had won. Although the season did not end how they would have hoped, they had a great year and the players made some terrific improvements.

This winter, Elise Christoferson has represented La Salle as a ski racer. She is participating in the Three Rivers League Races. The schools in the Three Rivers League are all 6A schools. (West Linn, Lake Oswego, Lakeridge, Lincoln, Wilson and Tualatin) Elise came in first on January 16,in a slalom race and was second in giant slalom races on January 30 and February 6. She is in second place overall in the Three Rivers League.

Boys' Soccer team earns two more awards

The Boys' Soccer team earned two more awards this week to go along with their state championship trophy. Joe Frimpong was named 4A Boys' Soccer Coach of the Year and senior David Leslie was named 4A Boys' Soccer Co-Player of the Year. Congratulations to Joe, David and the rest of the Boys' Soccer team. JV Boys' Basketball Loses in overtime

Boys' Soccer Wins State Title

The Boys' Soccer team defeated McLoughlin High School by a score of 2-1 on Saturday and won the State Championship Title. The game was tied at the half 0-0. La Salle scored first with a header by David Leslie on a corner kick. That was followed by a breakaway score by Alex Sulitzer. McLoughlin followed with a score by Christian Zaragoza, leaving the crowd anxious for the last few minutes to tick off the clock. It was a great game and it was awesome to see so many La Salle fans out supporting our team. It was the perfect end to a terrific season. For the statistics of the game click here. Cottage Grove Sneaks by La Salle on Penalty Kick in OSAA First Round

COTTAGE GROVE – La Salle Prep turned in an impressive performance in the first round of the OSAA playoffs Saturday night, but came up just short in a 1-0 loss to the Cottage Grove Lions.

The Falcons were eliminated from the tournament and concluded their season with an overall record of 9-7-1.

In a game played almost entirely in a driving rainstorm, Cottage Grove scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick late in the second half after La Salle was whistled for an unintentional handball in the box.

“Although we didn’t get the result we were hoping for in Cottage Grove, I thought our girls played some of their best soccer all season,” said first-year Falcon coach Ryan Cereghino. “I hate to have a game decided by a penalty, but that is how it goes sometimes. There were a lot of actions all over the field which led to the shot and the inadvertent handball.”

The game marked the end of the prep careers for eight La Salle seniors: Carly Christoferson, Elizabeth Danna, Stephanie Socotch, Marissa Cereghino, Courtney Lyell, Ashley Nunn, Genny Robinson, and Safiyah Maurice.

“After the game I told the players how proud I was of them,” said Cereghino. “The seniors will be missed, and provided our leadership all season. I am confident that the juniors will step into their leadership roles next year and continue where we left off. Coach O’Dell-Ream and Coach Braghero did an amazing job with the varsity squad and are great assets to the program. Coach Strand also did a great job developing the JV players and I anticipate some of these players to step up and contribute to the varsity team next year. I had a great year, and the players and the parents made this an enjoyable season. I am already excited and looking toward next year.”

Snader, Maurice Come Through with Key Goals to Help La Salle Move into OSAA Playoffs

MILWAUKIE – Michelle Snader and Safiyah Maurice scored goals Tuesday night to lead La Salle Prep to a 2-1 victory over North Marion High School in a Capital Conference play-in game. The win vaulted the Falcons into the OSAA girls’ soccer state playoffs, where they will open with a road game vs. Cottage Grove High School Saturday at 5 p.m.

“I am very proud of the girls,” said La Salle coach Ryan Cereghino. “They have worked hard all season, battled through injuries, and deserve to represent our league in the state playoffs.”

The Falcons, 9-6-1, opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Snader, a junior, put away a rebound following a shot on goal by senior Stephanie Socotch. Socotch’s shot was deflected the Husky goalkeeper, allowing Snader to find the loose ball and punch home a score from close range.

But the Huskies came right back to get the equalizer when captain Lindsey Evenson scored on a rebound shot of her own in the 22^nd minute. La Salle keeper Natalie Byrne made a valiant diving save of a shot, but Evenson was in the vicinity to collect the loose ball and tie the score 1-1.

The teams battled back and forth until a little less than 17 minutes remained in the game. That’s when La Salle senior Safiyah Maurice, positioned out beyond the top of the box, left-footed a 21-yard shot to the far post. The ball caromed off the post and traveled to the opposite side of the goal mouth, where it bounded off the near post and into the side netting.

La Salle totaled 16 shots (eight on goal) to North Marion’s seven (five on goal).

The winner of Saturday’s La Salle-Cottage Grove matchup will advance to play at Catlin Gabel Tuesday.

Before the game we celebrated all of the seniors on the football and cheerleading teams.

Socotch’s 3rd Game-Winning Goal Helps La Salle Beat Stayton, 1-0; Senior Night Thursday

STAYTON – Stephanie Socotch notched her third game-winning goal of the season here Tuesday afternoon to help La Salle Prep to a 1-0 Capital Conference girls’ varsity soccer victory over Stayton High School.

The win improved the Falcons’ conference record to 7-2-1 and their overall mark to 8-5-1.

Socotch, a senior who returned to the lineup after sitting out since Oct. 15 with a concussion, fought through two defenders late in the second half to get to a pass from Courtney Lyell and slid the ball past the Stayton goalkeeper.

“Steph’s leadership and play on the field is so valuable to us,” said La Salle coach Ryan Cereghino. “She provides a level of intensity and skill that is unmatched. Courtney Lyell started at right wing and played her best game of the season. She plays intense defense, fought for many 50-50 balls, and put some nice balls into our strikers’ feet, including finding Stephanie for the game-winning score.”

La Salle held a decided advantage in shots on goal, registering nine to Stayton’s one, in a game played on a sloppy, muddy field.

“This was the first time all season we played on a loose, muddy field,” said Cereghino. “Our players adjusted well as the game progressed and focused on their touch on the ball. I thought Stayton’s keeper played very well and made some key saves for their team.”

Next up for La Salle is Senior Night Thursday vs. Gladstone at La Salle Stadium. The match begins at 6:30 p.m.

Eight seniors playing in their final regular season home game will be Carly Christoferson, Liz Danna, Stephanie Socotch, Marissa Cereghino, Genny Robinson, Courtney Lyell, Ashley Nunn, and Safiyah Maurice.

Carly Christoferson’s Early Goal Lifts La Salle Prep to 1-0 Win Over Cascade

TURNER, Ore. – Carly Christoferson’s goal in the fifth minute was the difference-maker Tuesday as La Salle Prep defeated Cascade High 1-0 in a Capital Conference girls’ varsity soccer match.

Christoferson, playing a ball in the right corner, crossed the ball toward the goal that floated over the head of the Cascade keeper and into the back of the net. The Falcons dominated possession for much of the remainder of the contest, outshooting the Cougars 14-2.

“I asked a handful of players to take on new positions for the game vs. Cascade,” said La Salle coach Ryan Cereghino. “We had some players who missed some or all of the game due to injuries or family commitments. These players showed their versatility by doing a wonderful job with their new responsibilities on the field. Marissa Cereghino moved from the defensive line to help the team at striker and as a center midfielder. Genny Robinson played the game at right back and Amanda Byrne played as stopper.”

La Salle improved to 6-1-1 in conference play and 7-4-1 overall.

MILWAUKIE – A season-high 32-shot attack by La Salle Prep resulted in just one goal but that was all the Falcons needed Thursday night as they registered their second straight Capital Conference varsity girls’ soccer victory with a 1-0 win over Estacada.

Stephanie Socotch, a senior midfielder, was credited with the game-winner when she put a shot to the right corner of the net after trapping a Marissa Cereghino corner kick in the middle of the box five minutes into the second half. Socotch, who leads the team with five goals, left the game later with a mild concussion after getting struck in the back of the head with a ball cleared by Estacada.

La Salle improved to 5-1-1 in conference play and will take an overall record of 6-4-1 into Monday’s game at Cascade.

“The team did a much better job of creating offensive chances, especially by running down balls and forcing corner kicks,” said La Salle coach Ryan Cereghino. “Marissa Cereghino has been putting in nice balls from the corner and the game was decided by finishing one of these set plays.”

Senior Liz Danna was one of a number of Falcons who stood out offensively, according to Ryan Cereghino.

“Liz is really starting to develop in the center of our midfield,” said the first-year Falcon head coach. “She made some wonderful passes to our wings down the line and smart runs with the ball up the field. She created some dangerous offensive chances for us with her penetrating runs.”

Not to be outdone was a sturdy Falcon defense, which recorded its second consecutive shutout and third in its last four games.

“The back line – comprised of senior Marissa Cereghino, junior Emily Basile, and freshmen Amanda Byrne and Chloe Basile -- did a great job of limiting Estacada’s shots and offensive production,” said the Falcon coach. “Senior Genny Robinson also played well in the back after Stephanie’s concussion. I needed to move Marissa up into the midfield and Genny did a good job of keeping our defensive line strong.”

AURORA – Freshman Amanda Byrne’s goal inside the game’s final two minutes lifted La Salle Prep to a 1-0 victory over North Marion in girls’ varsity soccer here Tuesday.

The Falcons, who improved to 4-1-1 in Capital Conference play, controlled the match from the outset but were unable to finish any attacks until Byrne’s timely goal, her first of the season. La Salle, which defeated North Marion 1-0 for the second time this season, outshot the Huskies 15-2.

“The players had to play all 80 minutes this game to get the result we were looking for,” said La Salle coach Ryan Cereghino. “Amanda has played solid for us all season as outside back, and I am proud she had the opportunity to score the game winner.”

Byrne’s goal, which came on a half-volley with the outside of her right foot from close range, was set up by a corner kick by Marissa Cereghino.

“I moved Marissa to the forward position for the final 10 minutes of the game,” said Ryan Cereghino of his younger sister, who normally plays in the back line. “We needed to give North Marion a new look up front, and Marissa helped provide the extra energy we needed up top. She ran down some great balls from our midfield and earned the team two corner kicks, the last of which resulted in the game-winning goal. I give North Marion a lot of credit for making us earn everything in the game.”

Falcon keeper Natalie Byrne, Amanda’s older sister, was credited with the shutout.

La Salle returns home to host Estacada Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Gladstone Ends La Salle’s 5-Game Unbeaten Streak, 3-0

MILWAUKIE – Gladstone High put an end to La Salle’s five-game unbeaten streak Monday night, handing the Falcon varsity girls’ soccer team a 3-0 setback for their first Capital Conference loss of the season.

The Gladiators, who controlled things offensively for much of the 80-minute match, took an early 1-0 lead in the game’s 16^th minute when Haleigh Murrell gathered a rebound just outside the box and hooked a shot from 20 yards that sailed over the head of La Salle keeper Natalie Byrne.

Gladstone’s Ashley Beykovsky made it 2-0 midway through the second half when she scored following a cross from the right wing by Murrell. Beykovsky’s initial shot bounded off the right post, but she was there to put the carom away for good. Less than four minutes later, Gladstone closed out the scoring when Amber Jensen scored from close range into an empty net.

“I was impressed by the intensity that our players brought to the game,” said La Salle head coach Ryan Cereghino. “It was the hardest, toughest I have seen our players battle all season. I have to give recognition to our goalkeeper Natalie Byrnes. She played tough and took a beating coming out on a few shots. She received a few knocks to the head, including a forward’s knee, but she fought through it. Natalie also stopped a penalty kick with a diving save to her right. I was very proud of her performance and she is finding her tenacity and leadership in goal.”

La Salle, 4-4-1 overall and 3-1-1 in conference play, next plays North Marion High in a 4 p.m. road game Tuesday, Oct. 13. The Falcons defeated the Huskies 1-0 at La Salle Stadium on Sept. 17.

Falcon Girls’ Soccer Dominates Stayton in 3-0 Victory

MILWAUKIE – Elizabeth Danna, Ashley Nunn and Stephanie Socotch scored goals Thursday afternoon to lead the La Salle Prep girls’ varsity soccer team to a 3-0 Capital Conference victory over Stayton High School.

With the win, the Falcons improved to 4-0-1 in league play and 4-3-1 overall entering a key conference clash at rival Gladstone High School Monday night.

“The girls did a good job of bouncing back against Stayton,” said La Salle coach Ryan Cereghino, referencing a 3-3 Tuesday tie at Molalla in a game the Falcons led 3-0. “The theme for the Stayton game was to play an 80-minute game, and they did a better job at accomplishing that goal. We made good use of the width of our grass field, and our wings made good, smart runs.”

In a match dominated by La Salle from start to finish, the Falcons jumped out to an early lead when Danna, a senior midfielder, gathered a loose ball in the box and fired into the upper right corner of the goal 8 ½ minutes into the contest. It was Danna’s first goal of the season.

The Falcons extended their lead midway through the second half on Nunn’s first goal of the season. In a great hustle play, Nunn fought through two defenders out top, secured possession and was able to put a shot into the left corner of the net with 18:34 remaining.

La Salle’s final tally came courtesy of a penalty kick by Socotch, who scored a goal for the third consecutive game. Socotch’s PK, a bullet to the right corner of the goal with 11:53 left, was set up when Laura Vandehey was taken down in the box.

Freshman Jen McNasser Scores Twice as La Salle Prep Battles Molalla to 3-3 Standoff

MOLALLA – It was a classic tale of two halves here Tuesday night as La Salle Prep’s girls’ varsity soccer team played Molalla High to a 3-3 standoff in a Capital Conference game.

The first half was owned by the Falcons, who struck for two goals within a minute and added a third score just six minutes before intermission for a 3-0 advantage. But a heavy downpour at halftime seemed to wash away any thoughts that Molalla would go down quietly; the Indians got on the board 42 seconds into the second half, added another score 10 minutes later, and tallied the equalizer on a penalty kick with just 3:15 left.

It was the first non-win in four Capital Conference starts for La Salle, which is 3-0-1 in league play and 3-3-1 overall heading into Thursday afternoon’s 4:15 p.m. home game vs. Stayton.

“The girls played a great first half,” said La Salle head coach Ryan Cereghino. “Unfortunately, we did not come out strong in the second half and let Molalla back into the game with a quick goal. I give Molalla a lot of credit for not giving up and fighting for a draw. The players are going to learn from this experience and need to realize that a game is 80 minutes long, not 40.”

Freshman Jen McNasser was the offensive standout for the Falcons, striking for her first goals of the season in lightning-quick fashion midway through the first half. Her first came on a chip shot from 18 yards out after a series of caroms in the box following a Falcon corner kick, and her second was a one-touch liner 54 seconds later that came after a perfectly placed low cross from the right wing by Michelle Snader.

“Jen does a great job of listening at practice, reading the game, and putting herself in good positions on the field,” said Cereghino. “She hit the ball solid on frame and good things happened.”

Senior midfielder Stephanie Socotch, who scored a goal for the second consecutive game , gave La Salle a 3-0 advantage with 6:15 left in the opening half when she took a short feed from Elizabeth Danna and converted from 20 yards.

Falcon keeper Natalie Byrne turned in an outstanding defensive performance with a series of spectacular second-half saves against an onslaught of shots by Molalla, most of which came off the foot of the Indians’ Claire Thomas, who had two of her team’s three goals.

The speedy Thomas scored on a breakaway into the box at the 39:18 mark of the second half to give the Indians new life and cut the deficit to 3-1. After a couple of Thomas near-misses, including one shot that caromed off the right post and another from point-blank range that was saved by Byrne, the Molalla freshman struck again when she deposited a shot into the left corner of the net at the 13:39 mark.

Byrne came up with some more outstanding defensive plays in goal as La Salle tried to protect its lead, but when the Falcons were called for a foul in the box with 3:15 left, Molalla captain Anna Russell delivered a penalty kick into the left corner of the net to tie the score 3-3.

La Salle Prep Defeats Cascade 1-0 for 3rd Consecutive Girls’ Soccer Win

MILWAUKIE – La Salle Prep’s girls’ varsity soccer team ran its winning streak to three straight Thursday night, making its earliest goal of the season stand up for a 1-0 victory over Cascade High School.

The Falcons, who improved to 3-0 in the Capital Conference, recorded their third consecutive shutout while improving their overall record to 3-3.

Senior Stephanie Socotch sailed a 26-yard shot off a direct kick over the head of Cascade keeper Tiffany Klages 9:25 into the game to give La Salle the only goal it would need. The free kick was set up by a handball by a Cougar defender.

“Stephanie helped the team achieve our team goal of starting the game quickly and with intensity,” said La Salle head coach Ryan Cereghino. “We wanted to set the tempo early and score in the first 15 minutes of the game. After her score, though, the team had difficulty finishing opportunities. We had plenty of chances, but couldn’t connect.”

La Salle finished with 17 shots, while the Falcon defense limited Cascade to just one shot on goal. Goalkeeper Natalie Byrne had one save for La Salle.

The Falcons controlled the ball for a majority of the game, and Cereghino cited the play of his wing players for helping set up many of La Salle’s scoring chances.

“Carly Christoferson and Elise Christoferson did a wonderful job on the wing,” he said. “They both made smart, quick runs and helped create many of our offensive opportunities. The team will continue to work on communicating, building the attack, tackling hard and finishing.”

Next up for La Salle is a Tuesday road match at Molalla High. Game time is 6 p.m.

La Salle Girls’ Soccer Posts 2nd Straight Victory with 2-0 Win over Estacada

ESTACADA, Ore. – Perseverance paid big dividends for the La Salle Prep girls’ varsity soccer team here Tuesday night in a 2-0 victory over Estacada High School.

The rejuvenated Falcons’ offense, which totaled 15 shots on goal in its previous game, nearly doubled that total against the Rangers, firing off 28 shots in 80 minutes against Estacada. La Salle (2-3) finally wore down the Ranger defense after a scoreless first half, getting goals from Kat Werner and Carly Christoferson in a 3 ½ minute span to post its second consecutive win.

Kat Werner, who had the winning goal in last Thursday’s win over North Marion, finally broke the dry spell for the Falcons when she converted a pass from Emily Basile with 14:39 left in the match. Moments later, Werner assisted on La Salle’s second goal, feeding a ball to Christoferson that she chipped over the head of the Estacada goalkeeper.

“The players created numerous scoring opportunities throughout the game but had a difficult time finishing,” said La Salle head coach Ryan Cereghino. “They made much better runs, passes, and crosses, but just couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net. “

Natalie Byrne had four saves in recording her second straight shutout.

Said Cereghino, “Natalie made a grade save at the end of the first half to keep the game tied. The defense was caught looking for an offside call at the end of the half, but Natalie prevented Estacada from capitalizing on the opportunity. Kat’s goal picked up the intensity of the whole team, and I challenged the players after the game to being every game with the same energy.”

Next up for La Salle is a home match Thursday at 6:30 p.m. vs. Cascade High School.

Varsity football played a great game against Banks

If you weren't here on Friday night, you should have been. The football team stormed back from a 21-7 deficit to tie the score in the last minute of the game at 21-21. Unfortunately, Banks was able to get a quick score and seal the victory. It was a great game and it was terrific to see so many people enjoy a friday night football game under the lights. After the game, the football team, the cheerleaders and many of our supporters met for pizza at Old Chicago's and channel 6 news broadcast live from our party (click here to see the video). It was a very fun evening.

Werner Leads La Salle Past North Marion 1-0; Falcons Drop 5-1 Decision to Valley Catholic

MILWAUKIE – Kat Werner’s goal off an assist by Safiyah Maurice three minutes into the match proved to be the difference Thursday night as La Salle Prep defeated visiting North Marion High School 1-0 in girls’ varsity soccer.

The win helped the Falcons to a split of their two games during the week. On Tuesday, La Salle traveled to Beaverton where it fell by a 5-1 score to Valley Catholic.

La Salle (1-3), which had struggled to mount consistent offensive attacks in its first three matches, outshot North Marion (2-2-1) by a 15-3 margin in posting its first victory of the season.

“I was glad we were able to create more scoring opportunities and had some quality goal-scoring chances,” said La Salle coach Ryan Cereghino. “These offensive opportunities helped relieve pressure from the defensive unit; we were able to string passes together by moving off the ball and improving our touch. We were much more aggressive than our preseason games and won many more 50-50 balls, both in the air and on the ground. Senior Safiyah Maurice and junior Kat Werner worked well together to help score early in the game. I am impressed by the players’ abilities to work hard at practice and implement these skills into the game.”

Natalie Byrne played all 80 minutes in goal for the Falcons in recording the shutout.

In Tuesday’s game, senior Stephanie Socotch drilled a 30-yard shot past the Valley Catholic goalkeeper for La Salle’s lone score.

La Salle has two games this week, as the Falcons travel to Estacada High Tuesday for a 6 p.m. match before hosting Cascade High Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Sandy Posts 2-0 Victory over La Salle Girls’ Soccer

SANDY – Alyx McLaughlin and Jasmine Plaster of Sandy led a potent offensive attack here Tuesday evening as the Pioneers totaled 12 shots on goal in posting a 2-0 victory over the La Salle girls’ varsity soccer team. The loss dropped the Falcons to 0-2 heading into Tuesday’s 4:15 p.m. road game at Valley Catholic.

The 6A Pioneers and 4A Falcons played to a scoreless tie in the first half, but the Pioneers broke the La Salle defense down after intermission, getting open-net goals from McLaughlin and Plaster in pulling away for the non-conference win. McLaughlin’s score, coming six minutes into the second half, came on a chip shot from 15 yards after she reached a loose ball in the box and evaded the pursuit of defender Emily Basile. Later, Plaster gathered a loose-ball feed into the box and delivered a shot into an empty net after keeper Natalie Byrne had come off her line in an attempt to beat Plaster to an uncontested ball. Byrne finished with 10 saves for the Falcons.

La Salle had two shots on goal. “I feel we are playing too much of the game in our defensive third and working our defenders too much, so we will be working on our play in the attacking part of the field,” said La Salle head coach Ryan Cereghino following the contest. “Junior captain Emily Basile quickly recovered from the far side of the field to stop a breakaway attempt in the first half, and Natalie Byrnes made 10 saves throughout the game and will continue to provide leadership in goal. “Creating offensive opportunities will come with playing more soccer together, getting to know each other’s tendencies, and practice. We defended set pieces much better and tackled hard throughout the game,” Cereghino added.

Girls' Soccer vs. Catlin Gabel

MILWAUKIE –Alex Henry and Abby Conyers teamed up for a pair of first-half goals Thursday night to lead Catlin Gabel to a 2-0 girls’ varsity soccer victory over La Salle Prep in the season opener for both schools.

The match, an OSAA Foundation Endowment game, was played on La Salle’s recently-installed turf field and paired teams coming off OSAA state playoff appearances last season.

Henry, a junior midfielder, found the back of the net on both Catlin Gabel goals, each coming off feeds from Conyers, a senior. Henry’s first score, a header to the near post 5:10 into the contest, came off a perfectly executed corner kick into the box by Conyers. The duo teamed up again 11 ½ minutes later when Conyers served up a free kick from 35 yards out that Henry controlled from close range and shot past the Falcon defense.

Emma Ronai-Durning and Becca Garner, who shared goalkeeping duties for Catlin Gabel, turned back three La Salle shots on goal in recording the shutout.

“With only four practices as a varsity team under our belt, I thought the girls played well,” said first-year La Salle head coach Ryan Cereghino. “ I saw pieces of good soccer, but we need work on putting those pieces together from beginning to end. We are learning to be more consistent, playing together as a team, and getting to know one another and their tendencies. The team will be working hard this week in preparation for our next game on Tuesday at Sandy High School.”

Football squares off against Milwaukie and Rex Putnam

On September 3, the JV and Varsity football teams competed in a jamboree against Milwaukie High School and Rex Putnam High School. In each matchup teams had 18 offensive snaps beginning at the 40 yard line and 18 defensive snaps. Although they were not complete games, officials were present and the scoreboard was on. The JV scored more points than Milwaukie and Rex Putnam and the Varsity tied Rex Putnam 6-6 and outscored Milwaukie 12-0. It was a lot of fun to watch and all three teams got some good experience as they prepare for the first real game next week. The following pictures were taken by Kristin Rubalcava. Facility upgrades near completion

Fall practices began on August 24. The following pictures were taken on August 25. Most of our summer projects are complete, but we still need to paint the lines on the track.

Our new Musco lights are controlled by a computer program.
The announcer's booth looks great thanks to the help of the Boosters and a large group of parent volunteers. It is a tremendous improvement from what it looked like a few weeks ago. Hopefully we will build a new stadium within the next few years.

We added a fence and cement blocks for our parking spaces.
Boys' soccer and basketball will now have their own team room in the locker room.
The coaches' office also was upgraded with new lockers, paint and floor.
We sanded the gym floor down to bare wood and then repainted it. It looks brand new.
We took everything out of the training room except the whirlpool and the ice machine. Everything you see in this picture was either purchased new or was donated by Nike.

In June 2009, we broke ground on the new football and soccer field.

The softball field looks great. We moved the scoreboard, ran new electrical lines out to the field, built backstops, tore down an old fence and built a new fence and poured three cement slabs. After killing the grass, we tilled the field and brought in several tons of infield dirt.

The La Salle athletic facilities have changed dramatically over the passed 12 months. We have made the following improvements:

construction of a new softball field
installation of a synthetic grass field for soccer and football, complete with a new scoreboard and lights
new track surface and and field event locations
boys' and girls' team rooms in the locker rooms
training room renovations
resurfacing the gym floor
painting the pressbox
